Why this petition matters

Started by Granite Chief Wilderness Protection League

KSL Capital Partners has big plans for the Squaw-Alpine and Granite Chief Wilderness/Five Lakes Area in Tahoe’s beautiful Sierra Mountains. Their plans? Purchase Squaw Valley (done), purchase Alpine Meadows (done), and develop and monetize every possible portion of our natural resources and the surrounding wilderness. The purpose: to bring a hefty corporate profit to their exclusive, private investors.

A key component to their plan—and one we are committed to preventing—is a gondola between Alpine and Squaw Valley that would cut through the Designated Granite Chief Wilderness Area and the Five Lakes Trail.

The Gondola Project would permanently alter a pristine Sierra Nevada landscape that borders the Granite Chief Wilderness Area, endangering wildlife, destroying habitat and flaunting the intention of Congress when it protected the area in perpetuity. The Project proposes a gondola with dozens of towers and two large mid-stations, plus a construction road that will encroach into the designated wilderness area and degrade the Five Lakes Trail. Equally concerning, the Gondola Project has not undergone adequate environmental review or mitigation, leaving Granite Chief Wilderness vulnerable to the development of a new ski resort and housing subdivision within and adjacent to protected lands.

The Granite Chief Wilderness Protection League is asking everyone who cares about the preservation of Lake Tahoe's few remaining wilderness areas and hiking trails to sign GCWPL petition urging the Forest Service to follow Congress’s directive to purchase the designated wilderness lands that are threatened with destruction to protect them in perpetuity.
