Why this petition matters

Started by Concerned Community Members of Calgary

A man by the name of Kevin J. Johnston is currently running for Mayor in Calgary, Alberta. Kevin has a history of racist violence, being accused of assault in B.C. after his unwillingness to wear a mask during a global pandemic, as well as hate crime charges in Ontario towards Muslims. He is currently ordered to pay 2.5M.

Johnston is known for organizing, leading and speaking at far-right protests against government-imposed pandemic restrictions and has been taking to live streams to make violent threats towards anti-racism activists, AHS employees, government officials and the public in general. He is extremely dangerous and reactionary.

"I'll arm myself and I'll come right to your doors." - Kevin J. Johnston

In September of 2021, this man is set to receive a list that includes the names, addresses and phone numbers of every Calgarian eligible to vote, putting many people in harms way. To put in bluntly, many of us will be found dead in our homes if this man has any access to this information.

We must work together to ensure Kevin J. Johnston is disqualified from running, and that laws and policies are reviewed and changed to avoid anyone with such a record running in the future. Calgary deserves better.

HATE IS NOT WELCOME HERE!!!!!!

"When you have a candidate who is currently facing charges for, frankly, violent assault and you have a candidate who has been openly threatening people, then you've got to make sure you're looking out for the safety of citizens and for the safety of other candidates as well." - Mayor Naheed Nenshi

"It is the job of administration to protect those willing to participate in the democratic process." - Coun. Evan Woolley

"We must band together and ask Elections Calgary not to release voter lists to anyone. It will make our elections harder, but it will protect Calgarians. That should be our first job as candidates and elected officials." - Coun. Jyoti Gondek
