Why this petition matters

Started by Cob on Wood

There are nearly 150 residents of the Wood St. Encampment in Oakland that are in danger of being evicted by Cal Trans next month. This eviction would uproot people who have made Wood St their home for years sending them back out onto the streets and scrambling to find places to park their motor homes.

Included in the planned eviction is the newly created "Cob on Wood" community plaza. These are structures that have been built using all recycled materials, and covered in an Earthen cob plaster. They are fire resistant, well insulated, affordable, and pleasant to the eye. The Wood St Plaza is intended to provide a safe space where residents of the Encampment can utilize various services, with use of a kitchen, clinic, free store,.showers, gardens and seating.  An intention of this project is to create a model for other villages to be built adopting this style of alternative all natural building.

The organizers of the Cob on Wood project in solidarity with the residents of the Wood St encampment ask that you show your support to have these earthen structures protected, as well as to avoid the unnecessary eviction of residents who have made Wood St their home.   Many of the residents have no where else to go, and sending them back out onto the streets would be devastating.
