Build more Skateparks and Skateable Architecture in Berkeley and Oakland
The cities of Berkeley and Oakland need additional city-sanctioned skate spots. Skateboarding has increased in popularity, and now that it is included in the Olympics, existing skateparks—already over capacity—will be unable to fill community demand. The East Bay skateboarding community is diverse in gender, race, and age, as well as skill level and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Skateboarding has proven to be a safe outdoor activity available to our community, and we at Skate XP know there is overwhelming support for the construction of skateable architecture, large and small, in existing public parks and pathways throughout the East Bay. We hear this repeatedly from skaters, parents of skaters, school and community leaders.
As one of the skateboarding meccas of the world, we believe that one public, city-funded skatepark is not nearly enough for our growing population of more than half a million people across Berkeley and Oakland. We plan to work directly with local skateboarders to design these new obstacles, ensuring that the places we skate will reflect the creativity and ingenuity of our community.
Let us make our voices heard in showing Berkeley and Oakland civic leaders that we need more skateparks in the East Bay!
