Why this petition matters

Started by Everyone Knows Someone

The purpose of this petition is to call for action from the Canadian government to make efforts towards fighting the fentanyl mass murder crisis. Specifically, we want the government to handle "fentanyl overdoses" as murder cases.

WHAT IS THE CRISIS?
Every single day, drug dealers and suppliers are distributing fentanyl-laced drugs to students, teens, working professionals, recovering substance abusers, your neighbour, your coworker, your children, your family members, your friends.

Fentanyl is 50 times more potent than heroin making it so much more addictive, giving suppliers incentive for a lucrative business. But accidentally mix even 4 grains of salt worth more, and it's enough to completely kill someone.

Moreover, "overdoses" are being treated as just another statistic. In our experience, police have dismissed critical evidence and applied minimal efforts towards finding the people responsible for distributing this deadly poison.

There were 11,500 opioid-related deaths between 2016 - 2018 alone:

Everybody knows someone, yet what efforts have been made to stop this?

In addition, did you know you can purchase fentanyl online and have it delivered via Canada Post?:

Why are we enabling mass murder?

Article 3 of the International Declaration of Human Rights states "Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person". The increasing number of victims and the ease at which fentanyl is distributed shows the governments failure in protecting that right.

SO WHAT CAN I DO?

"OVERDOSE" vs "POISONING"
We also need to change the language we use to discuss fentanyl-related deaths. The words "overdose" carries the stigma of "only addicts overdose", or "that'll never happen to me". Whether it's the first time or the 100th, fentanyl spares no-one.

In addition, the word "overdose" puts the blame on the victim. No. These people have been unknowingly poisoned by evil, greedy, heartless suppliers. In other words, murderers.

SAVE A LIFE
Friends don't let friends do drugs. If you know someone indulging, say something. Tell their family or friends. You could save a life.

If you are in a situation where you think someone might have been poisoned, the "Good Samaritan Act" will protect you, call for 911 right away. You could save a life.

Don't even consider doing drugs recreationally unless you know the protocol for an emergency. This includes knowing the signs of overdose, and access to a naloxone kit during every single use. It's not a joke. You could save a life:
