Will you stand up for little lungs in Manchester?

We are two mums who are writing on behalf of our eight-year-old daughters. Jannat Nawaz and Jessica Hamer are two schoolchildren who live in Levenshulme and are junior campaigners for the British Lung Foundation.

We call on Manchester City Council to urgently implement School Streets across the whole of Manchester, to keep children safe and healthy.

This would mean that roads around entrances to all Manchester schools would be temporarily closed where possible (using retractable bollards) during the school run. These measures would be permanently embedded within council policy.

All children would be protected from damage to their lungs, hearts and brains from toxic air pollution. Kids, families and teachers would be safer from fewer traffic accidents and would be able to effectively socially distance at the school gates.
