Why this petition matters

We the undersigned are strongly opposed to the construction of a roundabout at the intersection of SR 41 (Tamiami Trail) and Gulf Stream Boulevard in downtown Sarasota.

No traffic studies have shown that the creation of a roundabout at this intersection will measurably improve the traffic backups suffered by the barrier islands, visitors and Sarasota residents. Also, there is no information that shows the two year construction will provide an intersection that functions at an acceptable level for a sufficient time in the future.  Furthermore, older drivers and tourists facing a unique traffic pattern at this high volume intersection surely will create a higher number of vehicle accidents.

Roundabouts are uncontrolled and require drivers to yield to those who have entered the circle.  Aggressive drivers often do not yield causing conservative or unfamiliar area drivers to hesitate. Backups and accidents will result. A roundabout at this high volume intersection will cause dangerous “every man for himself driving”.
Accidents in the round-about, which will be more frequent than at a traffic light controlled intersection, will completely shut the intersection down.

We urge the installation of “Smart” traffic lights and cameras.  We ask for pedestrian fly overs to be installed to insure safe and convenient pedestrian access to downtown and the bay front.  We urge traffic officers to facilitate flow control during peak periods.

The current plan for a roundabout at this key intersection is in direct opposition to the mission statement of the Florida Department of Transportation.  It fails to address the needs of the entire region and will not improve traffic demonstrably at this location.

Traffic jams caused by this intersection are negatively impacting property values, businesses and tourism.
