Why this petition matters

Started by Reagen Desilets

We ask the South Carolina Legislature to amend the laws regarding gender markers on legal documents to include, but not limited to, Drivers' Licenses and State Identifications, Birth Certificates, etc. The change requested is to allow a gender neutral option as well as streamlining the process by which gender markers on legal documents and identifications are changed. The best way to accomplish this is via legislative action where anyone can update their gender without discrimination and legal blockades.

Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Nevada, California, New Mexico, Colorado, Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maryland, Minnesota, Arkansas, Hawaii, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Washington D.C. have all amended to laws to consider the rights of transgender and intersex people. South Carolina needs to join them.

Science has proven and continues to prove that intersex, transgender, and nonbinary people are born the way they are and this needs to be reflected in their legal status. This can have a great many disadvantages if there isn't another gender option. It may affect employment, medical care, court cases, property purchases, rentals and any other aspects of their lives. More disturbingly, the news is filled with stories of transgender people being attacked and murdered. We must do what we can to include them in society and this would be a big step in the right direction. Not accommodating them is a violation of their basic human rights as well as Constitutional rights of protection.
