Why this petition matters

Started by Chantel Botha

The coastal strip in Kleinbaai is currently being excavated for the installation of a new sewer system. This area is the breeding ground for Black Oyster Catchers and White-breasted plovers.

For years the people living next to this coastline have admired the birds looking after their young. They have protected the nests by putting up signs so that holidaymakers and dogs do not disturb the breeding birds.

The once fragile numbers of the Black Oystercatcher have returned to a healthy population. Only momentarily.

In asking around the authorities in charge of the project at the municipality could not answer any of the questions about appropriate impact studies or the consideration of the impact on bird and sea life.

As custodians of our planet, it is our role to do due diligence in everything we do. To consider our actions today and the impact they may have for years to come. Meters of sea rock has been demolished in the area by massive jackhammer construction vehicles and a plover nest with two eggs that were still being watched by the expectant mother plover is now deserted.

Please sign this petition to stop the destruction of this beautiful coastline and stop the noise so that the birds can return to their beloved breeding grounds.

Let's stop the installation of the new sewer system and future pumping station that will introduce noise and large vehicles on this coastline on a regular basis for pumping sewage. Let's stop the destruction and annihilation of the breeding grounds of the birds before irreversible damage is done.
