Why this petition matters

I am a year 9 pupil and I know from first-hand experience that distance learning is extremely hard and I can only imagine how difficult it would be without a device. Keeping up with distance learning would be nearly impossible. Yet Ofcom estimates there are 1.1-1.8 million children students in the UK without a digital device on which they can learn. How in the 21st Century can such a critical mistake be allowed without massive multinational companies like Apple, Google, IBM and Microsoft rectifying it?

I am proposing tech companies give any old, used, or unused devices to schools. In this time of crisis everyone is doing their bit but the tech companies response to COVID seems weak for businesses of their size and wealth. How difficult is it for a tech company to give a child a second hand computer?

Technology is their area of expertise and they have the resources and money to make a difference. Every day of learning is vital and if a large section of school children miss out because they can’t afford a computer, that cannot be right. Can Apple, Google, IBM, Sony, Microsoft, and Samsung and other tech firms help bridge the gap and prevent the academic shortcomings of 1.5 million children across the UK. When history is written, will the question be, why didn't they help?
