Why this petition matters

Started by Ray Corona

For those who may not know, the entire immigration detention system that Trump is using was built by Secretary Johnson. There is absolutely nothing civil about the separation of children and families, the widespread abuse that goes on in these facilities, and in many cases, literal deaths caused by the inhumane treatment of ICE agents and the Department of Homeland Security. In the past two years alone, 22 immigrants died under suspicious circumstances, a good number of which have been children!

Seattle cannot distinguish itself as a “Sanctuary City” for immigrants when organizations like Seattle CityClub so willingly welcome the enemy into our own home.

From Seattle CityClub:

Civility & Security: Seattle CityClub’s Annual Benefit

"This year, our keynote speaker on the topic of Civility and Security will be former U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson. As Secretary and previously as General Counsel of the Defense Department, Johnson was a major player in key priorities of the Obama Administration and is considered one of the legal architects of the U.S. military's current counterterrorism policies."

In the news:

JOHNSON: We expanded family detention. You're correct. When I was in office, I was surprised to learn that out of 34,000 beds, we only had 95 detention beds for families. And so we expanded that. And anecdotally, we saw that families were surprised that we had done that and were calling back home to Central America to say that they were being detained. And so I'm quite sure...

More:

"USC’s choice to invite Secretary Johnson to speak normalizes illegal state violence. Inviting him to speak to the graduating class legitimates what federal courts and lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have recognized as a fundamental betrayal of core values," wrote Roithmayr and Cruz. "Johnson has repeatedly failed to respect legal and moral limits on the use of government-sponsored coercive force, particularly against children, and has demonstrated a morally repugnant willingness to use those who are most vulnerable among us as means to an end."
