Why this petition matters

Started by Mount Allison Students' Union

For current MtA students only.

We know that many of you are back home possibly in a different time zone and attempting to adjust to being in an environment that is not ideal for studying. On top of that, we know that you are overwhelmed with anxiety, frustration and fear over the pandemic and the impact that it is having on you, your loved ones and the world in its entirety.

We know that these are very unprecedented times, and we have heard your concerns and the demand that the university moves to incorporate a pass/ fail option for grading. We, at the MASU, are starting this petition with an intent to inform you of what this would actually mean if this option were to be incorporated along with asking for your signature if after reading the information below, you still support this.

The proposal is this: giving students the option of choosing how their grade is recorded on their transcript for the Winter 2020 Semester, which could include a letter grade as normal or opt for a Conditional Pass or Pass (CP/P) option.

For clarification:
     ·  Conditional Pass or CP - may not be used to fulfill prerequisite requirements, excluded from the GPA.
     ·  Pass or P, may be used to fulfill pre-requisite requirements, excluded from the GPA

Consequences:
     -  Numerical or letter grades are used to evaluate students for admission, scholarships, employment and other funding options at other institutions and organizations outside of Mount Allison.
     -  Many graduate and professional programs depend on numerical or letter grades for assessing admissions and can sometimes disqualify students from admission unless there are truly special extenuating circumstances (it is unclear whether future admissions committees regardless of the field will view this current crisis as an extenuating circumstance).

What this would mean to students for the rest of the semester:
     -  Students would still be required to complete the remainder of their work unless otherwise instructed by their professors or their course syllabus. In order to get a P (Pass) a student must have completed enough content and done well enough on it to have actually passed the course.
    -  Students would have until a certain date to declare their option (letter grade or CP/P) that has yet to be determined though possibly before students have received their final grades.
     -  These choices would be made by individual students and indicated in Moodle, they will not be applied on a course-wide basis.
