Why this petition matters

Started by CUPE 1281

Since the turnover of the Ryerson Students’ Union on May 1, 2020, the RSU executive committee has slashed their services in half. A drastic decision made, without surveying their student membership.

The RSU executive committee has an obligation to adapt their services and continue to provide students with programming and support at a distance. The RSU has not faced any cuts to their funds during the pandemic. In the process of the services cuts, five full-time employees have lost their jobs in the midst of a public health crisis.

Services that have been cut include:

1. Campus groups funding support
2. Discounted campus print shop
3. Events and online programming
4. Food bank services
5. Graphic design support for events and students groups

Across the university sector there have been no mass layoffs like this, even in the COVID-19 pandemic.

For months, our governments and economists have been cautioning against layoffs and encouraging employers to utilize wage subsidies to keep employees working as normal. This is a time where the economy should be strengthened by continuing full-time employment. However, the RSU decided to cut students' services and lay off workers.

We are calling on the RSU Executive to restore all students' services and reinstate every worker now!
