Why this petition matters

Started by CJ Jacob

COVID-19 still poses a severe threat to global society, as it is likely to surge again in the upcoming autumn season in the US. This means that university campuses nation-wide will likely become hotspots for the virus when it peaks again at that time. We must do all that we can to prevent this from happening, and mitigate its severity if it does happen. Because of this very likely and serious threat, colleges must reduce as much on-campus traffic as possible. For this reason, I am petitioning all universities, particularly those in the Pittsburgh, PA area, to offer optional fully-online curriculum for students to complete safely from home, and encourage its utilization. Offering fully-online curriculum may also help to bridge the transition if schools are forced to go fully online again. No college education is worth the subjected safety of its students. Universities around the nation need to act responsibly and implement this online curriculum structure now. There is no reason to not offer a fully-online curriculum option with today's widely available technology. Online college is the future anyway, so it is wise to pioneer the experience now. Students deserve to have a safe, clean education atmosphere that doesn't put themselves or others at risk. Universities need to act now before it is too late! Providing students the option to study completely online if they do not feel comfortable or safe attending densely populated campuses during a time of global pandemic is the right thing to do. Please do the responsible thing and put the well-being of the student and faculty body first. Many colleges have already made the commitment to offering fully-online coursework for the Fall 2020 semester. Now is the time to follow that lead. Prove that universities care more about their students than profit. Let's collectively set the standard for other universities around the world to follow. Together we can keep education safe!
