We're calling on Congress to pass H.R.4984-Affordable Housing and Area Median Income Fairness Act of 2019. Central Brooklyn and NYC as a whole has been blanketed with unaffordable housing projects that undermine the fabric of communities and fall short of the city's realistic housing needs. Astronomical rents is costing thousands of residents more than half of their income and thousands more are homeless. HUD's inclusion of Westchester and Rockland counties into the NYC area median income (AMI), inflated the real AMI, and caused rents to skyrocket, empowered the developer frenzy, and gave the green light for unaffordable luxury developments in low income communities and amplified gentrification. Long time residents were pushed out and thousands of men, women and children are without permanent housing as a result. Families with children represent over 70% of the city's subpar shelter system. This dynamic must change. It's time to correct the wrong and make the adjustments needed so that the metrics used to determine affordability can actually be based on the AMI of the five boroughs and the individual districts within. The passage of this bill would curb rents and help increase the affordable housing stock again. This bill was introduced in November of 2019, Sponsor: Yvette D. Clarke and has 22 Cosponsors. It was referred to the Committee on Financial Services and Ways and Means, on the same day of introduction and never left. The affordable housing crisis in NYC cannot be fixed without addressing the accuracy of the AMI. It's time to bring this bill to the floor and pass it, so that the residents of NYC can once again have real affordability and fairness in housing.
