Why this petition matters

Started by Brandon Delgado

By adding a traffic signal at the intersection of Bloomfield Avenue and Lemming Street in Lakewood, California, it will promote the safety and well-being of citizens in the area, whether it be cars or pedestrians.

There have been countless car crashes at this intersection, with numerous involving pedestrians. People constantly race down the street during the day, and at night, for that matter, risking the lives and well-being of everyone around them. Often in the middle of the night, cars are doing donuts in the intersection, not only creating a nuisance for the residents, but also jeopardizing the lives of any late-night pedestrians and the homes that sit on the corners.

There are currently no stop signs going north/southbound, flashing pedestrian lights, nor any form of warning devices, only a painted crosswalk on one side of the intersection. The street lights are very dim, and it can be difficult to see far ahead of you, especially when people who are crossing are wearing dark clothing.

The latest victims of this dangerous intersection were hit by a car at around 8:45p.m. on Friday, March 12, 2021, and unfortunately both passed away at the scene. About a year or two back, another person became the victim of a car versus pedestrian crash. Regular motor vehicle accidents are common at this intersection, even if they don't involve a pedestrian.

As there are several schools nearby, the ABCUSD employs a crossing guard at this intersection to help students and parents cross safely. Time and time again, the crossing guards have been nearly struck by cars who have a blatant disregard for them, their stop sign, the people they are crossing, and their whistle. The crossing guard also puts a big, bright, orange traffic cone in the middle of the crosswalk to get drivers attention, and instead it has been struck and knocked over multiple times.

Overall, many people's lives have been put in danger at this intersection and it's time for the City of Lakewood to step up for the well-being of their citizens and visitors, while increasing safety and awareness at the intersection of Bloomfield Avenue and Lemming Street.

Please sign this petition that will be sent to the Lakewood City Council so that the practice of public safety can no longer be ignored!
