Unconditional release of all Iranian political prisoners due to COVID-19 crisis
Unconditional release of all Iranian political prisoners due to COVID-19 crisis
Why this petition matters
Dear Professor Javaid Rahman,
The United Nations Special Rapporteur of Human Rights in the Islamic Republic in Iran
Some members of the Iranian political prisoner’s family have expressed their concern over spreading Corona virus in Iranian prisons. Per these conditions, the families of political prisoners have asked the Iranian government to prevent humanitarian catastrophe by releasing them until the end of the crisis.
A lawyer and woman activist Nasrin Sotodeh whom was sentenced to a total of 38 years of imprisonment with 148 lashes on March 11, 2019, has announced she is going on a hunger strike to demand the release of all political prisoners in Iran. Her political motivation in amidst of fear that inmate's safety could be jeopardized by spreading Corona virus will be overwhelming towards the jail's health system.
Prisoners are at high risk of contracting the virus, because of inadequate access to healthcare along with close proximity of other inmates. If anything were to happen to these political prisoners, the Islamic Republic will fall responsible.
We ask you to increase more political pressure on the Iranian government to release all political prisoners.
Best Regards,
Human Rights Committee of Iranian Cultural Association
