Why this petition matters

Started by Alex Spencer

Residents in a row of historic cottages in Waterbeach have been horrified to discover their homes could be demolished to make way for a new segregated bus route.

They only found out about the proposals after one neighbour trawled through a 400-page Greater Cambridge Partnership (GCP) report about suggested routes for the new busway between the Waterbeach new town and Cambridge. But none of the families was approached by the authority to warn them about the possibility that their homes could be destroyed.

Three of the four suggested routes for the new segregated busway from Waterbeach to Cambridge appear, on a map in background papers, to plough straight through their houses. A consultation is being held on which route should be chosen, but the brochure does not mention the possible risk to homes.

Families have lived in these homes for more than 20 years, their children have grown up in these houses and now they cannot make any plans for the future while this hangs threat over them.

We are calling on the Greater Cambridge Partnership to rule out any route option that will involve homes being demolished.

And we call on the GCP board members to pledge they will not vote for a busway between Waterbeach and Cambridge that results in demolition of houses.
