Why this petition matters

Started by Zara Abrahams

Recently Twitter locked out many users of their accounts for no reason. When the users asked why, they where provided with the explanation that they “promoted hate symbols”. This confused many people, as they had never to their knowledge promoted hate online. Yet when they looked at all the accounts that had been locked out, they realised a trend. They all had the Star of David in their profile pictures.

The Star of David ✡️ is one of the key symbols in Judaism, and it is very important to Jewish people. It was degraded and defiled during WW2, and reclaiming it is an important part of moving on. It is a part of Jewish identity. So when the Star of David is targeted, Jews are targeted.

You may also know that the Star of David ✡️ is also a part of the flag of Israel . Whatever your views are on Israel and it’s government and Zionism, this has nothing to do with it. This is an attempt to remove Jews and our voices from places under the pretence of progressiveness. It may seem menial, but this is a small step in banning and erasing a whole religion and ethnicity in the name of protecting people. But it’s never been about that. It only gets worse for people from here.

Banning the Star of David is an attack on Jews. It makes us vulnerable. It makes it easy to turn us out of spaces and to remove our platforms under the guise of politics. So don’t do nothing. Far too often, anti-semitism is overlooked and undermined. I am only fifteen, but I know that not enough people care to do anything until it’s too late, so I am creating this petition to do something. So please, do your part. Sign this and share it, and make sure people know that this won’t be accepted, before it’s too late.
