Why this petition matters

Started by Shevonne Hutchins

On many occasions l and many wheelchair users are left without access to the one safe, legal wheelchair space provided in buses. I have been left waiting in the rain for an extra 45 minutes because a passenger refused to move her stroller filled with shopping bags, due to cases and shopping trolleys being left in the way even though there are loading bays for such items. I have been refused access when mothers have refused to put toddlers on their knees to close strollers. There are spaces provided for pushchair users.

Different bus companies have different policies, arriva specifically seem to have varying policies depending on the driver and whether he has had a good day. No law protects us. There is no national legislation. All a good bus driver can do is ask for the individual to make space but if that person refuses to cooperate , its the disabled passenger who is left off the bus, no matter our situation. It could have been an important hospital appointment, job interview, meeting. Sitting in the rain, cold, wind may make us ill.

THIS NEEDS TO CHANGE!!

I hope to change legislation so that disabled passengers/wheelchair users are protected by law so our space is truly available.
