Why this petition matters

Started by Frederick Borst

We’ve all seen it, idyllic imagery of a seemingly utopian future in which everyone pays their groceries by swiping their iPhone or Apple Watch across a wireless payment machine.

Now, that future isn’t so utopian after all. At least, not for the residents of a whole host of countries that are not the Netherlands. The French, Germans, British, Spanish, Italians, they are all living in this world already. For them, Apple Pay is just a normal part of life. But for us humble Dutchmen, it is not.

Apple and the Dutch major banks have left a tiny but gaping hole in Apple Pay’s geographic service coverage, that needs to be filled as quickly as possible. After four years of waiting, the wait should be over.

That’s why I’m starting this petition, to make Apple and our financial institutions finally answer to the needs of the people. To the latter group, Apple Inc. and Eddy Cue (or his EMEA equivalent) I’d like to say the following:

As exemplified by many of my fellow Dutchmen using expensive and convoluted workarounds to get Apple Pay in the Netherlands, we would be willing to pay for the service if need be. We understand that you, Apple, may demand a fee and we know that card transactions come extremely cheap for retailers in the Netherlands. That’s why we’d understand if we’d have to pay a small fee for the feature. Just make it fair, and introduce it quickly.

There's no excuse. Please bring Apple Pay to the Netherlands. Many thanks in advance.

Please join me in my movement, and share this petition wherever you can. We need that already 4-year-old but still very awesome feature, and we do need it now. The ball is in both your courts, Apple and Dutch banks.
