Why this petition matters

Started by Kyle Mostert

Apple Pay is a mobile payment and digital wallet service by Apple Inc. that allows users to make payments in person, in iOS apps, and on the web although Apple Pay web support is limited to the Safari browser only. It is supported on the iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad, and Mac.

EMV and contactless payments are already widely accepted throughout South Africa and have indeed been for a number of years. According to Stat Counter , iOS accounts for about 15.12% of the mobile phone market in South Africa (roughly 8.6 million devices). Over 55 000 000 card transactions are processed every month with a spend of R34 000 000 000. We are ready for the roll out of alternatives to card payments and Apple could stand to benefit substantially (as could the bank which introduces to the country first).

Once this petition gets the required amount of signatures I will forward it to the relevant banks as well as Apple in attempt to motivate them to work on rolling the product out to South Africa. Apple pay will be beneficial in that it allows for a safer payment method which doesn't the presence of a physical card, with the prevalence of crime in South Africa this can only be beneficial not only for individuals but for the thousands of local businesses within South Africa.
