Why this petition matters

Started by Miranda Booth

Like many small villages over 30 years Etchingham has seen a steady increase of traffic and with an increase in vehicles, has been a significant increase in speed leading to one fatality.

Despite regular speed watch, one petition and countless meetings with County council, the villagers continues to run the daily gauntlet with vehicles driving in excess of 50mph, with the highest day time speed recorded as 63mph!

Last year a lorry squashed 2 wheelie bins after mounting the pavement due to speeding  through the village and this lorry like hundreds everyday, had sped past the primary school and just 10mins before the same pavement would have been occupied by pupils and parents walking home from school.

The linear layout of the village means that the road known locally as 'the straight mile', lies to the west of the village and finishes OUTSIDE OF THE PRIMARY SCHOOL and the current limit is 30mph.

However this road sees speeds of over 70mphs and traffic frequently passes the school doing more than 30mphs while children and parents walk within inches of their wheels!  Recently a lorry's wing mirror knocked a parent and injured her shoulder, in addition blew over her small child with the sheer force of the wind created by this vehicle!

And still we only have single file pavements for most of the walk to school and no reduction in speed, why?  Arguably because lives in Etchingham Village aren't a priority!

Please support this petition to finally reduce the speed through Etchingham by any means possible, thank you.
