Why this petition matters

Started by Melissa Moore

Canada has caused and still does cause the indigenous people of Canada great pain, and by having a statue (a form of commemoration) to John. A.Mcdonald  someone who kept residential schools going,  and made sure they kept running is inappropriate. Not to mention the 1876 indian act that DIRECTLY led to residential schools and mass genocide. As well as the assimilation act he enacted in 1883 to make indigenous practices and traditions illegal. The infamous railway was built because they starved the inidgenous, lots died of starvation.  Many children were raped, beaten, and murdered in residential schools. The last one closed down in 1996, we must not forget this is not our land. To show commemoration to someone who did such heinous things and keep a statue of that as a permanent reminder on indigenous land is an abomination.

Theres an argument that when we take the statue down it will cause us to forget history, unforutantely even if that were possible many indigenous don't have that luxury. History of this nature is meant for the museum, the statue itself is not. Keeping it is a permanent reminder of what went on in the very recent past. As Canadians, we pride ourselves on being a diverse country, but keeping this statue shows our true colors and white-centric ways. The only way to fight injustice is to presently support minorities in their fight for justice. It's not enough to just not be racist one must be anti-racist, a country built for one is a country built for none.
