私たちの目標は、ここ沖縄にウミガメの保護区を作ることです。

もし可能となればきっと日本で初めてのウミガメ保護区となるでしょう。現在私たちは島全体においてウミガメの活動を監視させて頂いているのですが、その中でも特に読谷村にある宇佐ビーチ周辺に重点を置き、保護区を設置する計画を立てています。

それにあたり私たちは行政の方々と交渉をしていく必要があり、地元の地権者の方々やウミガメ保護区を作る上で関わる様々な政府機関の方々と日々話し合いを重ねています。

そこで地域のみなさんに支持を頂いていることを示すのが、まさに保護区を設立する上でとても重要な部分となってきます。私たちの活動の背景には地域のみなさんのサポートがあり、そしてその声が大きければ大きいほど、行政の方々も耳を傾けざるを得ないでしょう。

Our goal currently is to create a sanctuary for sea turtles here in Okinawa. This would be the first sanctuary of its kind in Japan. We are currently monitoring turtle activity across the island, and specifically focused on the area surrounding Uza Beach in Yomitan where we plan for the sanctuary to be located.

As you can imagine this involves dealing with red tape. We are discussing the proposed sanctuary with local landowners and the various government agencies responsible for and connected to the sanctuary.

Being able to show that the community supports us is an extremely important part of establishing the sanctuary. If you are behind us, and if our community voice is loud enough, they will have to listen.
