Six tenant families, refugees from Cambodia and Vietnam or immigrants from Thailand, are fighting eviction in Los Angeles’ Chinatown. Many came to the US decades ago, forced to resettle as a result of the war and chaos in Southeast Asia during the 1970’s. They have made Chinatown their home, living in the building for up to 14 years. Now, they are being displaced again in the country that helped “resettle” them.

At the end of July, all tenants from 920 Everett received a notice from their landlords, owners Robert and Rosa Chow, that they had to move within 60 days and face eviction on 9/26/2019. The building has been sold to a new owner, a developer, American Collateral Buyers, LLC who wants the building empty. As low-income Cambodian, Vietnamese, and Thai refugees and immigrants, the tenants cannot afford to move anywhere else in the neighborhood. Due to rising rents, affordable housing in Chinatown has become scarce. 

But the tenants are determined to stay. Charisse Pham, granddaughter of an elderly tenant, stated “They think that Asians won't fight, that we'll just be quiet and leave.  But we will fight for our homes.”

The 920 Everett Street Tenant Association demands that the 60 day notice to move be rescinded and that they be allowed to stay in their current homes at affordable rents.
