Why this petition matters

Started by Act For Farmed Animals

McDonald's has committed to not support this cruel practice of caging chickens for egg production and instead asks you to think about the food safety of their products which are produced for consumers in North America, Latin America, and Europe. But not in Indonesia, where McDonald's applies far poorer standards!

More than 150 million chickens in Indonesia live in cages to produce eggs. The largest research ever conducted on poultry living conditions shows that this system (also called battery cages) is terrible for food safety, as the chance of humans becoming contaminated by bacteria such as salmonella is 25 times higher from chickens raised in a battery cage, than that of a cage-free chicken.

On industrial-level farms that use battery cages, animals are often given antibiotics continuously, even when they are not sick. This practice is directly responsible for the increase in super-bacteria (superbugs) that are resistant to antibiotics, which can be deadly to humans.

Not only could this affect our health, but the battery-cage method of raising chickens is one of the cruelest forms of animal confinement known in the world. Imagine, these chickens live in narrow cages which are only as large as a piece of A4 paper. They can't walk, stand fully, or spread their wings completely. These cages can also make these chickens lose or shed their feathers due to stress, and have been known to cause painful bone diseases such as osteoporosis in the chickens contained within.

Even worse now, Mcdonald's applies 'double standards', because while they have committed to stop buying eggs sourced from battery-cage farms in North America, Latin America, and Europe, they have not done so for Indonesia. Then why not in Indonesia? Indonesians deserve the same treatment as consumers in other countries!

Even Nestlé, Unilever, Kraft Heinz, and Mondelez International have committed to only use eggs from chickens raised outside of cages in their products in Asia, including in Indonesia. So why can't McDonald's do the same thing?

There is no reason for McDonald's to not join this movement, for the sake of both humans and animals. Please, sign this petition and share it with all your friends!
