Why this petition matters

Started by Louis DiModica

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, students around the world are learning from home.  We understand that this presents difficulties to everyone, as change typically does.  However, many of us have goals and dreams of excelling in the world of academia.  Our futures in college, graduate school, and our careers are dependent on our high school grades.  This is why we think it is important high school students choose between two options: traditional A-F letter grades or the PASS/FAIL system.

The State of California has left this decision up to the individual school districts.  We ask our districts to help our students individually, instead of assigning the "one size fits all" of a PASS/FAIL grading system. California State Dept. of Education Official Statement

The California State Department of Education has given this option to high school students enrolled in community college classes. (page 2, paragraph 2) California State Dept. of Education High School Enrichment Policy

Most graduate schools do not accept AP credits based on the PASS/FAIL system and require a letter grade. As colleges transition to the option of a PASS/FAIL grading system, students planning on attending graduate school are concerned for their applications.  The same applies to high school students taking AP classes.  Attention to the following article: https://hechingerreport.org/choosing-pass-fail-grades-may-help-college-students-now-but-could-cost-them-later/

Many of us are taking difficult AP classes in hopes of boosting our GPA for high school honors, college admissions, and graduate school dreams.  We want the choice for our future.  High school students should choose between two options: traditional A-F letter grades or the PASS/FAIL system.
