Why this petition matters

Started by GW Squash Alumni

The GWU Athletic Department released a statement on 31 July announcing its plans to discontinue the Men’s and Women’s Varsity Squash programs upon the conclusion of the 2020/2021 athletic season.

The GWU Squash program has a rich history, a strong and active alumni community, and a successful track record, both in performance on, and in social engagement off, the court. The Men’s and Women’s teams have equally fought their way from the bottom of the collegiate ladder to career highs of 9th and 7th in the country, respectively, and have won a combined total of 6 national CSA Division Championships. Both have consistently finished in the top 15 nation-wide – among top-tier schools – and have been the only teams at GW to roster a total of 7 players awarded All-American status. The dedication and commitment of the coaches, players, staff, classmates, colleagues, friends, and families deserve better.

As a collective community of GW Squash alumni, we are deeply disappointed by the University’s decision, and are saddened by the way in which the Athletic department chose to communicate – with a formulaic email and a generic explanation of financial necessity.

GW Squash’s record speaks for itself. The Men’s and Women’s teams have fought for and earned their place as varsity programs at GWU and the GWU Squash alumni respectfully request that the University open a constructive dialogue regarding this decision.

We greatly appreciate your support for the program and hope that through your signatures on this petition we can work together to reverse the GWU Athletic Department’s decision.
