Why this petition matters

Started by Sharon Wada

The closure of the West Seattle Bridge has been a nightmare for the thousands of West Seattle residents.  The City of Seattle's Seattle Department of Transportation SDOT (Seattle Department of Transportation) is evaluating options to either shore up or replace the bridge.

Local engineering experts have outlined a viable solution using an ITT (Immersed Tube Tunnel) under the Duwamish River.  There are numerous advantages to this option including lower cost, faster construction, and better earthquake resistance. The BART system in San Francisco uses ITTs and numerous under river tunnels have been successful in Michigan, Japan, Hong Kong, Holland, and Germany.

SDOT must keep an open mind to ALL options, even if SDOT and local engineering firms are more familiar with bridges. This is an emergent situation for 80,000 Seattle residents who were impacted without warning and the ITT option has significant merit that could be a SUPERIOR solution to another expensive, subpar bridge.

Please listen to the ideas of those who live and work here and stay open to the best solution rather than the obvious one.  Thank you!
