Why this petition matters

Started by Impeach Boris

Though the British Parliament has not impeached anybody for over 200 years, it does still have the power to impeach public office holders who commit high crimes and misdemeanours.

We, the British people, believe that Boris Johnson has committed several such actions and we urge the House of Commons to begin impeachment of the Prime Minister.

We believe there may be evidence to impeach PM on following high crimes:

Abuse of Power: To protect Dominic Cummings from the consequences of his lockdown breach, the PM has used his office to misinform the public and silence public criticism.  He also allowed Cummings, an unelected adviser, to give a press conference from 10 Downing Street.  We believe this is akin to the POTUS allowing an adviser to give a speech from the Oval Office

Johnson's prorogation of Parliament in 2019 was ruled unlawful by the Supreme Court but he has yet to face any consequences.

Negligence: The PM's widely reported failure to act during the initial stages of the COVID-19 crisis has cost many lives and contributed to UK having one of the highest COVID death rates in the world.

Furthermore; Many journalists and public figures have alleged Johnson has eased the lockdown and rushed the deployment of the UK's Track and Trace system in order to divert attention from the Cummings Scandal.  If this proves to be the case, it is a clear case of negligence in office and breach of public trust.

Why Impeachment?

Allies of Johnson will argue that impeachment is an obsolete process which is no longer required in our Parliamentary system.  We disagree; Johnson could easily survive a motion of no confidence in his government as members of the Conservative Party would be unlikely to sacrifice their large parliamentary majority to hold the PM accountable for his crimes.  However, there may be many Tory MPs who would be willing to hold the Prime Minister to account if there was a way of so doing without threatening their majority.  Impeachment is, therefore, the logical solution.

Furthermore, there have been few Prime Ministers in recent memory who have assaulted our democracy (2019 Unlawful Prorogation), shown such blatant disregard for public opinion (Cummings Affair) or avoided as much public scrutiny as Johnson has.  We urge Parilament to hold him to account.
