Approve the designation of the Washington Square West Historic District
Approve the designation of the Washington Square West Historic District
Why this petition matters
Nine years after its submission to the Philadelphia Historical Commission, the Washington Square West Historic District proposal remains unequivocally stalled and the buildings it comprises are becoming increasingly imperiled.
Originally proposed by the Philadelphia Preservation Alliance, the Washington Square West Historic District, located in Center City Philadelphia, is roughly bounded by 8th, Watts, Walnut, and Rodman streets. Within this area of approximately 26 city blocks, one can see a mostly contiguous range of buildings comprising of architectural styles dating from the eighteenth through
late twentieth centuries. The neighborhood is predominantly adorned with charming Federal and Greek Revival townhouses, impressive ecclesiastical structures and several other high-style examples of varying vernacular. In addition, tall commercial, office, and apartment buildings, are clustered at the northern and western edges of the District.
If created, buildings within the District would receive both oversight and protection from the Philadelphia Historic Commission regarding alterations and demolitions. Therefore, we respectfully urge the PHC to expedite their process in reviewing and approving Washington Square West as a designated historic district.
