Why this petition matters

Earth’s climate is now changing faster than at any point in the history of modern civilization. Global climate change has already resulted in a wide range of impacts across every region of the country and many sectors of the economy that are expected to grow in the coming decades. Glaciers have shrunk, ice on rivers and lakes is breaking up earlier, plant and animal ranges have shifted and trees are flowering sooner. Scientists have high confidence that global temperatures will continue to rise for decades to come, largely due to greenhouse gases produced by human activities. As such, each of the papers in this series is structured: to encourage youth in the community to plant trees in line for sustainable development and to improve biodiversity conservation.

“Sustainable development” was defined by the United Nation (UN) World Commission on Environment and Development in 1987 as “development which meets the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. A sustainable economic system is difficult to define due to uncertainties over timeframes and the complexity of assessing environmental impacts. However, it is clear that a more sustainable system is one which allows for greater efficiency in resource use and recycling of materials through an economy. Modern society is placing an increasing demand on the earth’s resources and the capacity of natural systems to absorb our waste and pollution. This is affecting environmental quality across the world. Impacts related to the human activities that influenced the change of climate—such as human health, agriculture and food security, water supply, transportation, energy, ecosystems, and others—and are expected to become increasingly disruptive in the coming decades.

How can a single tree help the world? Trees are like the lungs of the planet. They breathe in carbon dioxide and breathe out oxygen. Additionally, they provide habitat to birds and other wildlife. Carbon dioxide is one of the major contributing elements to the greenhouse effect. Trees trap CO2 from the atmosphere and make carbohydrates that are used for plant growth. According to Clean Air Garden (2015), mature trees can absorb roughly 48 pounds of CO2 a year. The tree in accordance to its role releases enough oxygen to sustain two human beings. Trees also help to reduce ozone levels un urban areas and absorb sound and reduce noise pollution.

Why we should start planting trees? Thousands of studies conducted by researchers around the world have documented increases in temperature at Earth’s surface, as well as in the atmosphere and oceans. Many other aspects of global climate are changing as well. Human activities, especially emissions of heat-trapping greenhouse gases from fossil fuel combustion, deforestation, and land-use change, are the primary driver of the climate changes observed in the industrial era. Johnsen (2019) reported that the increasing frequency of record-breaking temperatures, unprecedented ice melt and extreme weather shifts have already started. He added that if Earth warms more than 1.5 degrees, scientists think the world’s ecosystem could start to collapse.

In order to combat the issue of climate change, countries with big companies who contributes a large scale of gas emissions must limit themselves that may result to global warming. Each country should be on agreement to establish productive urban forests where in innovation is in accordance to sustainability and development of a nation. Government must partner with other private sectors and international body in building programs that could convince people to be more responsible with their environment and molding their minds to be an environmental advocate. Aside from that, making tree planting as a responsibility to each individual is the greatest way possible for us and the planet to recover. Even with the pandemic, we can still make this changes happen. A simple planting in your backyard and recycling could already help, but, the difference between an individual's action to majority leads a gradual effect to the world. That's why everyone must take an action.

Earth is our home. The only home that we have and could ever live for. It provided our needs, resources and everything that we acquire today. If we cannot protect it, how can we witnessed a future ahead of us? Let the youth of the future witnessed and see what we had experienced. We are held accountable of everything that had and will happen, for we are the knowledgeable one among all the inhabitants in the planet. Sign this petition and help us Save the World.

With your help, we would be able to experience a well- developed and sustainable future ahead of us.
