Why this petition matters

Started by Over The Rainbow

Togo is a small West African nation with a grand spirit. However, remnants of German imperialism continue to manifest themselves, particularly in the form of an 1884 penal code that allows people to receive a fine and up to three years in prison for consensual same-sex sexual activity.

This archaic law is virtually unenforced; when it was passed, Togo was a German protectorate called Togoland. This law, therefore, serves only to stigmatize and silence LGBT2SQIA+ individuals in the country, subjecting them to existences of poverty, fear, and violence when they would otherwise be able to become creative and productive contributors to Togo's booming economy.

As Togo continues to move forward in terms of business and other issues impacting the masses, so too should they consider social justice and repeal this burdensome and pointless law in favor of equality in the vibrant nation.

We, the undersigned, demand Togo join the ripples, tides, and waves that have formed the thundering surf of progress that has been the past several decades. We know Togo to be a place of considerate and industrious people, and we respectfully yet adequately request a reply in the form of the abolition of this criminal code!
