Why this petition matters

Started by Ken Jaworski

The Park Community Centre is an important community space in Brandon. For many decades, the Park CC has been home to music events, charity fundraisers, wedding socials, organizing committees, potlucks, classes, and much more. It has served as a true community space in a neighbourhood that has little else.

A report prepared for Brandon City Council in advance of this coming Monday’s Council meeting recommends this local community centre should be closed, demolished and converted to green space, .

According to the report, the centre as it stands has both structural and air quality risks that require action in the face of inevitable further deterioration. An option to undertake repairs that would restore the centre to its full 143-person capacity would cost in excess of $130,000. A separate option for repairs that would allow a capacity of 40 people would come at a cost of $60,000 - $100,000. Alternately the cost of closure and demolition is estimated at $70,000 - $100,000.

The purpose of this petition is to urge Brandon's Mayor and City Council to do the right thing and FIX the Park Community Centre, instead of demolishing it. The extra financial cost of revitalization over demolition is negligible, and this Brandon institution should be preserved for future generations to enjoy and use to the benefit of their neighbourhood.
