Why this petition matters

Started by Episode User

Ora is a well-known author on the Episode app. Her most notable stories are Loco Amor, Loco Amor: Revenge and Shielded Heart with an estimate of 5.5 million reads across all of her stories. She has nearly 48 thousand followers on her Instagram account, @ora.epi.

This petition has been set up for the following reasons:

  1. Her Loco Amor stories contain a series of problematic and inappropriate content, from misrepresentation and sexualization of the Spanish culture to offensive "dark" humor and even plagiarized material (the story includes a whole copied scene from the first scene of this video). By offensive humor, I mean a false representation of Muslims (linking Islam to terrorism; implementing "Allahu Akbar" as a means to "represent" Islam), glorification of suicide (calling somebody "cute" for being suicidal), cultural appropriation, slut-shaming, and sexism.
  2. Her story Shielded Heart includes copied quotations from Caitlyn Siehl's What We Buried in a slightly reworded manner. It is speculated she did not gain permission from the original author since she did not credit her initially; she only credited the author once she was called out and accused of plagiarism. However, according to Episode's guidelines, implementing any excerpts from existing literary works without permission is not allowed.
  3. Many of her readers have been reaching out to her on Instagram recently to express their concerns and dislikes regarding her stories, however, she never truthfully took anything anybody told her into consideration. She says she is unwilling to accept criticism if it's in the form of "hate", which these people haven't done.

Many of her readers have been offended by the content included in her stories, especially those from Hispanic and Muslim backgrounds. We believe this issue lies beyond the "if you don't like something, don't read it" ideology. She is involuntarily teaching her impressionable readers that what the characters in her stories are doing and saying is okay and justifiable, which it is not. She continues stereotyping and misrepresenting cultures outside of her own and including offensive "jokes", which can potentially trigger affected people.

Here are a few links that contain proof of the mentioned accusations:

  1. Loco Amor is problematic and overrated
  2. My problem with Loco Amor
  3. Sexualization of Hispanics
  4. Why do you need to copy?
  5. Plagiarized scene

Due to the continuous problems with Ora and her stories, as well as her unwillingness to cooperate and listen to her readers, we believe she leaves us no choice but to have her stories taken down or have her banned from the platform altogether.

If you agree that Ora's stories should not be kept on the Episode app, please share this petition. Help us spread the word. File a support ticket to Episode to let them know as well!
