Why this petition matters

Started by A M

On the 4th of July at approximately 4:00pm, a press conference was held by Daniel Andrews, the Premier of Victoria, stating that the public housing buildings in North Melbourne and Flemington will "effective immediately, these estates – encompassing nine sites – will be closed and contained. Residents will be required to stay inside their homes."

Residents of public housing, as well as being vulnerable to COVID-19 as are the rest of Victorian citizens, are a community with a plethora of pre-existing disadvantages such as being asylum seekers/refugees, living with disabilities, suffering from mental health issues such as PTSD and Anxiety/Depression and many more.

The communities living in the public housing of postcodes 3031 and 3051 the ONLY citizens in Victoria being instructed that they "cannot leave their homes under any circumstances", with absolutely no warning whatsoever. This imprisonment "will be in place for at least the next five days", according to PM Daniel Andrews, which is a vague description given the calamity of the situation.

It is clear to see that ethnic communities are being targeted by the government, being treated like criminals with "500 police guarding each building". Please sign this petition and help us achieve fairness and equity among ALL communities!
