Why this petition matters

Started by T P

Many schools have decided to start filtering out sites such as Replit which allows students to code in the browser. Some schools have called the site a "distraction" as kids are choosing to learn computer science and programming as opposed to working on other subjects. This is a problem for many teachers who use Replit, as it takes away a vital educational tool. We're looking to get Replit unblocked in schools. Not only is it an educational tool, but it is helping to inspire young people to pursue computer science, which is a growing need in our advancing world.

As a student, Replit has been instrumental in allowing me to explore programming. I knew that I liked programming early because of the work of Scratch. I’ve been using Replit for the past 3-4 years because of how easy they make it to get into programming. I started using replit in my freshman year AP computer science class, because it made it really easy for a whole bunch of students to program without any set up (AND ON CHROMEBOOKS!). I’ve been using Replit since then for various projects and programs, it’s gotten me to the point of seriously considering majoring in computer science in college. Blocking Replit is sacrificing the ability for kids to learn about valuable STEM skills, all for keeping kids on-task. There are better ways to solve that problem.
