Why this petition matters
Over June and July 2020, Emergency Leaders for Climate Action (ELCA) hosted Australia’s first virtual bushfire and climate change summit to coordinate a national response to the Australian climate and bushfire crises. ELCA has released its “Australian Bushfire and Climate Plan” which is available at the link below.

“The Federal Government must urgently address climate change, and rapidly phase out the burning of coal, oil and gas which is driving more dangerous fires,” said Mr Greg Mullins, former commissioner of Fire and Rescue NSW.

In April and May 2019 ELCA corresponded with the Prime Minister and sought opportunities to brief him on the alarming potential of the looming bush fire season, then again later in 2019 when the catastrophic fire season, as warned, started to rapidly deteriorate. Ultimately after significant efforts to establish dialogue, a short meeting was held with Ministers Littleproud and Taylor on 4 December. By then hundreds of homes and a number of lives had already been lost in NSW and Queensland.
No tangible changes or actions resulted from the December meeting, and further lives, together with hundreds of homes, were subsequently lost to the flames in NSW, Victoria and South Australia.

The SBS Broadcast and Channel Nine have positively aired the Emergency Leader's for Climate Action's Plan but hardly any space has been given to the nature of increased fire risks, in the mainstream print media. The monopoly over Australian media and the powerful fossil fuel lobby who have the money to campaign or promote in their interests has detracted from the significance and urgency for the need for climate change.
The implementations in the Plan are achievable right now and over the next decade and can be undertaken in tandem with Beyond Zero Emission's "Million Jobs Plan" and "Repower Australia".
Please read the Plan and/or the Submission and sign and share this Petition. Our lives need to be safe, and expansion of the burning of fossil fuels (coal and oil) has to stop to reduce carbon emissions. These emissions warm up the Earth with bad results.
Australia can be a powerhouse for renewable energies, while reducing fire risks. In their submission to the "Bushfire Royal Commission", ELCA states:
It could be argued that the measures recommended by ELCA, if implemented, could have helped to reduce losses. If this proposition is accepted, it may also then be inferred that the Australian Government was negligent and abrogated its responsibility to protect Australians by failing to listen to and act on information and advice offered by experts concerning an imminent emerging national disaster.

“We can’t fight fires unless we fight climate change.” No more hiding the truth. Australia can use recovery from COVID-19 to bring in renewable energies while reducing the warming of our Earth from fossil fuel burning.
Save lives. Implement the Australian Bushfire and Climate Plan. Listen to the experts and take action now. Stop fossil fuel burning and invest in energy-saving and in renewable energy and clean jobs, with a just transition for fossil fuel workers.
