A scourge of linguistic violence pervades popular music writing, that of excessively liberal usage of the adjective "atonal" to mean something like "dissonant", "noisy", or "weird". While freedom of expression has its virtues, those who reside within the concrete tower need to consider their privilege and evaluate their role in shaping discourse. Atonality is a concept with an actual specific meaning: namely, the absence of a tonal centre. Works of the Second Viennese School may be considered as seminal examples. A wide range of pieces of music may well fit this description - however, Nels Cline Singers' Share the Wealth and Siouxsie and The Banshees' The Scream are, by and large, not among them. We condemn this practice and call on all right-minded music listeners to do likewise.
