Why this petition matters

Started by America Figueroa

Currently the Indio City Council is conducting a study in hopes of approving commercial cannabis sales within city limits. During their last study session which took place on November 19th, there was a lack of citizen representation. Only one person from the community spoke against COMMERCIAL CANNABIS LEGALIZATION, and several people in the cannabis industry spoke in favor of it.

The legalization of cannabis/marijuana in the City of Indio will have egregious effects on our community. Sadly, the members who will be most affected by the legalization of this dangerous drug are our teens and our young adults. According to a recent study by RAND, a research and analysis corporation, and published in the Journal Addiction on June of this year, which included 1,887 participants from LA County, they concluded that: “For young adults in Los Angeles County, living near more medical marijuana dispensaries (MMDs) is positively associated with more frequent use of marijuana within the past month and greater expectations of marijuana's positive benefits. MMDs with signage show stronger associations with number of times used each day and positive expectancies.” With many of our neighboring cities already offering cannabis at their shops and dispensaries, there is no need for Indio to follow into their steps. We need to put our children and youth first.

Sign this petition and request that the City Council Members of the City of Indio, DO NOT remove the ban to the sale of commercial cannabis within city limits.
