Why this petition matters

The 'genocide' of Hazaras is the world’s most silent atrocity. So silent, in fact, that even in the unlikely event you have heard about it, it’s more than likely you know only its foggiest details.

Hazaras of Afghanistan have suffered losing of more than a thousand deaths and injured during the National Unity Government (NUG) in last five years. Almost all orchestrated attacks along with various suicide bomb attacks,  target killings, beheadings, and kidnappings have been proclaimed by the Taliban and Islamic State-Khorasan Province (IS-PK).

Hazaras in various parts of Afghanistan have been the victim and target of around 30 suicide and orchestrated attacks by the Taliban and IS-KP in various public places such as schools, education centres, mosques, health clinic, demonstration and religious ceremonies.

Noticeable by Asiatic appearance, cultural and linguistic differences with other Afghans, Hazaras have been carrying marks of ethnic cleansing, land confiscation, mass murder, slavery and persecution since 1891. Listed below are some of the horrific incidents targeting Hazaras in recent years:

  1. Bombing Outside Girls-School Killing at Least 90, teenage girls leaving class, Western Kabul Dasht-i-Barchi.
  2. The recent Taliban attacks on Jaghori, Malistan and Urozgan Khas left several hundred casualties, and approximately 10,000 displaced families
  3. The frequency of hostage taking, abduction and kidnapping Hazaras is occurring at an alarming rate. There have been numerous incidences of Hazaras kidnapped and killed by such a way in the last 5 years. The prime examples are those incidents occurred in Zabul, Ghor and Parwan province where tens of Hazaras were abducted and beheaded.
  4. Based on the latest published research, around 1500 Hazaras including children, women and men have been killed, mostly beheaded in Zabul province (Kandi Posht area) during the Taliban regime. Other
sources consider the actual victims of Kandi Posht higher than of the earlier estimation by counting it around 3000 deaths

A key issue for the Hazara community is the general climate of impunity, whereby those behind such atrocities – both past and present – continue to justice. The International Criminal Court (ICC) decision to approve an investigation in Afghanistan gives victims of these atrocities hope for future justice. We request, from the ICC, the Presiding Judge, and the Prosecutor to ACCEPT further evidence of systematic attacks, victims testimonies, and representation. The continued attacks on Hazaras, in schools, sporting clubs, religious places, and targeting of peaceful street demonstrations amount to crimes against humanity and  genocide
