Smithfield Foods is a $13 billion global food company. So with that being said it is somewhat incredulous that amid the COVID-19 outbreak in the United States they are choosing to not abide by the President’s social distancing guidelines. Workers work in especially close proximity a large majority of the time in these facilities. Although Smithfield considers itself to be “essential” we should also keep in mind that humans lives and mental wellbeing are essential as well. In order to keep everyone safe and healthy and in order to deter the transmission of COVID-19 they should shut down facilities for at least 2 weeks (paid) so workers are able to self quarantine and that facilities may be thoroughly cleaned.
