Why this petition matters

Started by Brian Masse

Ojibway Shores is a 33-acre greenspace and is the last remaining, undeveloped natural shoreline in Windsor-Detroit, and it needs long-term protection. It is home to hundreds of endangered species that rely on migration through surrounding local parks for survival. This includes Ojibway Park, Spring Garden Natural Area, Black Oak Heritage Park, and the Tallgrass Prairie Park, to name a few. If connected, this area including the Detroit River could become one of North America`s treasures. Ojibway Shores is a vital piece serving not only as a home and larger ecosystem to these species, but also provides natural heritage areas that our community can enjoy, appreciate, and use for healthy living space and ecotourism. It’s time to protect Ojibway Shores from future development and transform this greenspace into a National Urban Park.

Petition to the Government of Canada

PROTECT OUR FUTURE: SAVE OJIBWAY SHORES! Support a National Urban Park Now

We, the undersigned, citizens of Canada, draw the attention of the Government of Canada to the Following:

WHEREAS - Ojibway Shores is 33-acre parcel of land, an ecological treasure hosting rare flora, fauna and countless species-at-risk and is owned by the federal government and overseen by the Windsor Port Authority in Windsor, Ontario;

WHEREAS - These endangered species rely on the surrounding parks including Black Oak Heritage Park, Ojibway Park, Tallgrass Prairie Park, Ojibway Prairie Provincial Nature Reserve and the Spring Garden Natural Area;

WHEREAS - According to experts, this land should be used to ensure the vitality of the numerous endangered species, be grouped together for long-term preservation, and to ensure that residents can enjoy ecotourism in perpetuity;

THEREFORE - We, the undersigned, call on the Windsor Port Authority and the Government of Canada to transfer the Ojibway Shores lands back to the people of Windsor and Canada, work with other authorities overseeing the additional protected lands in the Ojibway Prairie Complex, and create a National Urban Park similar to the Rouge National Urban Park, for the long-term protection of this vital land and the endangered species that inhabit it.
