Why this petition matters

Started by Jaime Singh-Yuz

In response to the surge of anti-Asian hate following the pandemic, Instagram has added new gifs and images to their sticker feature. We were pleased when they did this for movements such as Black Lives Matter, as the stickers highlighted the movement, with images of the BLM logo; the fist.

However, for advocacy for Anti-Asian Hate, the new stickers have played into harmful stereotypes towards Asian people, more specifically East Asians.
These stickers include animations of personified boba tea, sushi, characters with slanted eyes, and Chinese takeout exclaiming to “stop Asian hate”. Rather than expressing unity, strength and change, the way Instagram should, they have played into stereotypes that have been held against Asians (even more so to commit hate crimes during the pandemic) to harm them.
Stereotypes against Asians, again, more specifically East Asians, have played a huge part in the hate crimes being committed against them during the pandemic. Criminals have used them to target Asians when commuting their hate crimes. After the racist rhetoric by various public figures including former president Trump, and the new ideology that the coronavirus is at the fault of all Asians, we have seen a heartbreaking surge in Anti-Asian hate.

Instagram is a huge platform for advocacy, we must remove these racist stickers. Instead, we need to strive for unity, and work together to un-learn harmful stereotypes.
