Reinstate the footpath / cycle path on the A 540
Reinstate the footpath / cycle path on the A 540
Why this petition matters
The A 540 has had a large number of serious accidents involving cyclists over the years .
When this road was upgraded to a dual carriageway approximately 40 years ago, a six foot wide tarmac footpath / cycle path was installed on it's east side between Leahurst and Two Mills, a distance of 5.3 Km
Although the path is still there it has been allowed to deteriorate to such an extent that it is now completely covered in grass and is a hazard to walk or ride on.
A very dangerous section of this high speed road is where it starts bending towards the South between Puddington Lane and Two Mills, as the low sun on winter mornings dazzles drivers.
Highways England spent £540,000 on safety improvements to the Two Mills junction recently. As part of these improvements a short section of cycle path was installed, however the hazard remains.
The existing 475 metre long path between Puddington Lane and the Highway England new cycle path needs repairing and reinstating as a matter of urgency.
