Why this petition matters

Started by Kenneth McMurtrie

A lot has been written in the past few months about the Disneyfication of Edinburgh during the festive season and the height of the summer when the city reaches breaking point due to the extra number of visitors attracted by the Festival & Fringe. The city council have responded with supposedly conciliatory words and gestures, despite the extra numbers of hotel beds still being nodded through, lack of concrete proposals to manage tourism, subservience to corporate interests etc. The latest of the latter is the previously hidden wish to sell off the naming rights to elements of the city's Princes Street Gardens as part of the redevelopment of the Ross Bandstand (the Quaich Project). https://www.heraldscotland.com/news/18240566.edinburghs-princes-street-gardens-put-corporate-sponsorship/ Do we really want to be making use of a green space permanently associated with a gambling company, whisky blender, haggis maker, tat shop etc? No, this should be nipped in the bud now and the gardens left with its pathways unnamed. That goes for the overall site name too.
