End Racism in Sachem Central School District
End Racism in Sachem Central School District
Why this petition matters
Long Island has a long history of racism and segregation, and Sachem is no different. The recent killings of George Floyd and the growth of the Black Lives Matter movement have helped to shed further light on the failings of Sachem to educate its students and community on issues such as racism, intersectionality, and privilege in the United States.
We call on the Superintendent's Office and Board of Education to make educational reforms such as adding BIPOC authors to English curricula, having forthright confrontations with the history of racism in this country and community in our History classes, and updating and expanding civics education to make sure that our young people are informed on social issues and equipped with the skills necessary to be engaged members of the community.
We would also like to see a commitment to increase the diversity of staff and faculty members, by hiring more teachers, administrators, and staff members of color alongside the implementation of thorough diversity and understanding training for all those who are already Sachem employees.
We demand that Sachem CSD cease its participation in the traffic of racist stereotypes through the use of Native American names and imagery in our schools which in no way honor those peoples whose land our district now occupies.
Please do your part in creating a better educated, more compassionate community.
