In 1947, at the time of India and Pakistan’s independence from Great Britain, Kashmir was free to accede to either country. The province was majority Muslim but ruled by an Hindu king. Though he wanted to stay independent, he was convinced to join India. At the time of independence, India agreed and set out in its constitution a 'Special Status' for Kashmir through Article 370. Article 370 is legislation which guarantees significant autonomy for Kashmir and came into effect in 1949. Article 370 was brought in to safeguard the rights of the Kashmiri people by ensuring Kashmir was exempt from the Indian constitution and allowed the state to create its own laws in all areas except finance, foreign affairs and communications and defence.

Now India has revoked Article 370 of their constitution and removed the 'Special Status' of Kashmir which safeguarded the rights of the Kashmiri people, a move which has been strongly condemned by Indian opposition in Parliament and Pakistan and is a direct violation of the UN resolution and Indian constitution. “Any attempt by India to change the existing constitutional arrangement of Indian occupied Kashmir will be a violation of international law and UN-mandated obligations,” said international law expert Ahmer Bilal Soofi.

India has further deployed 180,000 paramilitary troops in Kashmir to add to the 700,000 already present, making it the most militarised area in the world. It has imposed a curfew and cut communication lines including TV channels, internet, mobile services and landline phones. The motive behind this curfew by India is unclear and limited media coverage cautions a risk of human right violations in Kashmir - Amnesty International.

Human rights abuses in Jammu and Kashmir are well documented. The allegations range from mass killings, forced disappearances, torture, mass rape and sexual abuse to political repression and suppression of freedom of speech.

Recent report by UN on Jammu & Kashmir (8th July 2019) once again affirms massive human rights violations perpetrated by the Indian occupation forces in IoK.

We need to stop Indian occupation forces from mass genocide and human rights violation after revoking Article 370 and ask International institutions and forums to upheld the UN resolution of self determination for the Kashmiri people. Please share and sign the petition.
