Why this petition matters

Started by Ajit Poudel

THIS IS A NATIONAL STATE OF EMERGENCY AND IT GREATLY INVOLVES YOU, YOUR LOVED ONES,  MOTHER NATURE AND THE ENTIRE HUMANITY.

The airport perimeter covers 80 km2 (8000 hectares) of land of Bara distrct, near the town of Nijgadh in province no. 2. It is targeted to be completed by 2025 with an estimated investment of USD 6.7 billion. The project area is a heavily forested area & the forest is known to be the last remaining native hardwood forest in the eastern Terai. According to an environmental & social impact assessment carried out by the Tourism Ministry in Feb 2017, more than 2.4 million trees will have to be felled to build the international airport in three phases.

Why to Stop?

This area is a home to numerous species including 500 species of birds, 23 endangered flora and 22 endangered wildlife species such as Bengal Tiger & Elephant. Once the primary forests/wild areas are wiped out, it will change the site forever and the damage is irreparable. Large bird species like Giant Hornbill will eventually die due to lack of roosting trees. Environmentalists predict that the destruction of such a large number of trees may lead to the severe flooding in Birgunj, Gadhimai, Gaur & Kalaiya area as a result of the forests not being able to absorb the rainwater.

There are 1,476 households of Tangia Basti to be replaced but public participation during the course of EIA was lacking and it seems to be a personal benefit than nation.

What is the Solution?

  • Wildlife conservation is not anti-development. Rather, it is about parallel goals where there is a balance between development & conservation of the environment.
  • The alternatives to Nijgadh, notably Murtiya of Sarlahi district, which would require clearing only 2,700 hectares of land
  • Upgrade TIA & by the time, there will already be 3 other international airports (Kathmandu, Pokhara, & Bhairhawa). 3 Int'l airports will be enough for a small country like Nepal.
